Recently, with the assistance of Region 19 Education Service Center and independent consultant Art Jordan, a representative sample of the 2,180 AVANCE student graduates between 1998 and 2012 was taken to determine the long-term academic outcomes of AVANCE students. The results show that the AVANCE programming continues to deliver long-term positive outcomes that lead to academic success for our community’s children.

TAKS 2011 Results

In spite of lower Social Economic status, the AVANCE students did well across all areas and did better than both Region 19 and the State in three areas; Math, Writing, and Social Studies.

The AVANCE early childhood and parenting program continues to change the odds for disadvantaged children and continues to have a long-term impact on children’s academic success as demonstrated by results of their achievements on the TAKS 2011 accountability assessment. High school graduation and college enrollment rates are outside the scope of this study, but results from studies conducted in San Antonio indicate higher rates for AVANCE students as compared with the State.

Beginning in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3–8 will assess the same subjects and grades that are currently assessed on TAKS. At high school, however, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments: Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, biology, chemistry, physics, English I, English II, English III, world geography, world history, and U.S. history.

A larger sample size will be available as more AVANCE graduates progress through the educational system. The STAAR system will be used for any future analysis on the academic successes of AVANCE Graduates.
