About Dr. Tererai Trent

A scholar, motivator and humanitarian, Tererai Trent grew up in an impoverished village in Zimbabwe. Despite being married young, bound to an abusive relationship, and the mother of three young children by the time she was 18, Tererai Trent was undeterred from her dream to obtain an education. Eventually she traveled to the US and juggled three jobs while raising five children and attending classes – all to earn her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate -- in order to offer her children a better future.

A firm believer that education is the main pathway out of poverty, Dr. Trent established Tinogona (Shona for "it is achievable”), which builds and repairs schools in rural Zimbabwe. Hear Dr. Trent tell of becoming her own dream keeper to break the cycle of poverty and abuse that had predetermined she would live her life a poor, uneducated woman. A powerful storyteller and motivator and sought-after international speaker, Dr. Trent will inspire each person to dream big and make a world of difference. Proceeds from the evenings event will benefit the thousands of children and families served by AVANCE - El Paso.
